Caroline Seekings, Nutritional Therapist, Dip ONT, BANT

"My role as a Nutritional Therapist is to provide personal dietary guidance which is tailored to your individual nutritional needs, and designed to help you achieve your health goals.

Among the benefits many look to gain from Nutritional Therapy are weight loss, increased vitality, and relief from specific symptoms or ailments.

The first step in the nutrition consultation process involves you completing a simple nutrition assessment questionnaire and food inventory, the results from which will help me to identify and isolate any deficiencies or imbalances which may be responsible for your symptoms, or which may be reducing your potential for optimum health both now and in the future.

Depending on the benefits you are ultimately looking to gain, I am able to offer a variety of consultation options, ranging from a one off consultation, to more long-term dietary support and guidance. For many of my clients, the option for regular dietary manipulation is invaluable in helping them to achieve their personal health goals.

Ultimately, my aim is not only to help my clients to look and feel better, but more importantly to empower them to take charge of their own health by teaching them the mechanisms by which certain foods can either undermine or promote their own health. This knowledge, and the ability to accurately apply it to everyday food selection, is vital to their achieving and maintaining optimum balance of mind and body, both now and in years to come.

I pride myself on offering a high degree of client care, professionalism and confidentiality in my clinics, whilst striving to maintain a comfortable and relaxed environment at all times."

Frequently asked questions:

1. What is your role as a Nutritional Therapist?

My role is to provide personal dietary guidance to individuals to help them achieve their health goals.
For example, I can devise personal eating plans to help promote weight loss, higher energy levels, or improvements in a specific symptom or condition.

2. How do you go about devising a programme for somebody?

Initially, I complete a thorough assessment to determine whether the person has any deficiencies, imbalances or food sensitivities which are contributing to their symptoms or health problems.

This involves looking at the persons diet, lifestyle and environment, as well as their symptoms, and in some cases it will involve the use of clinical tests to detect such problems as food intolerances, hormone imbalances, or nutrient deficiencies.

3. And what is the next step in the consultation process?

From these initial findings, I am able to devise a nutrition programme which will help to correct these issues. This includes recommendations on food choices, eating patterns, supplements, and exercise.
The natural side effects of putting this advice into practice can include weight loss, increased vitality, relief of symptoms, and reduced risk of future ill health.

4. How quickly can you begin to see or feel results?

By changing food choices and patterns of eating, improvements in energy and motivation are very quick to appear. Weight loss is often slow and steady, which is ultimately the only way of keeping the weight off.
With this approach, it is possible to achieve the right sort of weight loss, and that is fat, and not water or lean tissue.

5. In terms of helping somebody to lose weight, what are the benefits of this approach over some of the other diets out there today?

Rather than being just another diet, this approach is more of a new way of life.
It is all about making changes that are sustainable.  Many diets are designed to help you lose weight, and not to make you healthy. In fact, many of the popular diets have very serious health implications.
This approach is designed to tackle the underlying cause of weight gain, as well as improve overall health and well being.

6. Who would you recommend to seek Nutritional Advice?

Anybody can benefit from seeking the right nutrition advice, the reason being that you can be nutrient deficient despite having a reasonably good diet, and despite displaying no outward symptoms or health problems.
In particular, though, it is those who are struggling to lose weight, with perhaps 2 or 3 failed diet attempts behind them, that I would urge to seek nutritional advice.
Equally, those with unresolved health problems or symptoms should also consider this approach.

Please note:

The information and advice provided on 'Foodsense.co.uk' should not be used as a basis for drastic change in diet, as individual reactions to foods, food combinations and patterns of eating are variable.  To confirm the suitability of any of these recommendations it would be necessary to consult a qualified nutritionist who can give specific guidelines based on your biochemistry.  On a final note, if you are considering any drastic change in diet, always consult your doctor beforehand.
